Rocket German – Is It Any Good ?

For anyone out there looking at learningGerman through a self study course like Rocket German, the primary question you will have is does it work ? Will I learn German through using this course ? It’s a good question as nobody wants to splash the cash on something that won’t live up to the expectations or claims that are promised on the adverts. So this article will give you a brief Rocket German review, touching on what it can do for you and what You Need to do for it, to successfully learn German. 

Let’s start with you first. You see nothing will teach you successfully unless you have the right attitude. And this applies to Rocket German. Regardless of the strengths and weaknesses of a course like Rocket German, if you expect to just sit down, turn on the course and suddenly learn German via some arcane process, molecular telepathy or osmosis then you will be sadly disappointed. It requires a bit of effort on your part and this all comes down to your motivation and focus.

You have to be motivated or inspired to learn German. You need a reason to want to learn it. And this reason should be fairly substantial. If you want to pass a test or impress a friend then the chances are this motivation will soon fade when you come up against the tank traps known as German grammar or the super long vocabulary that you have to learn. Simply put, you’ll soon lose interest and find something else more exciting to do.

Getting a strong motivation will help you progress and reminding yourself why You Are learning German will also help you to focus on the task at hand because it can clarify your thinking. So before you splash the cash on Rocket German or any course for that matter, ensure that you have a strong reason to want to learn German.

For example, you may be an exchange student in Germany or Austria for a year. Or maybe you have a job in Switzerland. Or you may have become involved with a special girl that only speaks German. What’s more you are meeting the parents next year. Now that’s certainly a strong motivation. It will certainly keep your eye on the prize.

Rocket German is a medium priced self study language course. It falls into the not really cheap but not really expensive either. For this price tag I would say it over delivers if you were to compare it to other products in the language self study market.

Educators believe that teaching is more successful if you can present your points in as many learning modalities as is possible. Learning modalities are the types of ways that people learn new things. Some people learn by doing, some learn by reading, some learn by watching other people doing the task.

Learning modalities include providing written material, audio material and even video material to teach. It also includes having good enough tasks and exercises that can help somebody effectively do the task for themselves and thus learn in the process.

On this point, Rocket German covers all bases. The only thing that is missing in fact is video. There is no video which is not a big deal when learning language but it would be a nice touch. However, video is not essential in my opinion when learning a new language and the comprehensive audio course takes up all the slack of a missing video or two. And Rocket German certainly has a good audio course that can be listened to pretty much anywhere at any time. Along with that it has interactive games so that people that like to do can ‘do it’ and for those that like to read and write there is a workbook with exercises. They also have exercises as another do it task.

It is a good course that delivers value for money and will help you learn German if you apply yourself and have the right motivation.
