Easy Piano Lesson For Starters
When you know absolutely bothing about the piano and are just starting with your first easy piano lesson, it is always ideal to begin with something familiar. {How about the Middle C}? You’re not sure what it is? It is the key that can be found right at the center of the piano. If You Are familiar with how a C key looks like, you would easily identify the Middle C since it is adjacent to the printed name of the piano manufacturer.
From there, you could work out the meanings of the note, scale, octave, chord and chord progression.
As your first lesson, place your right thumb on the Middle C. This is what is called in piano training as the 1st position. Remember: All the fingers of your hands correspond to a specific number. The thumbs are always the number one fingers, the index are the number two fingers, the middle fingers are labeled as number three the ring fingers, the number four, and the Little Fingers, the fifth fingers. In the first position, your thumb or your number one finger should rest on Middle C. You will observe that in many piano lessons, the number one position often involves both of your thumbs, but for now, the right thumb will do.
Moving on, rest all your fingers on their positions – thumb on Middle C and the rest of your fingers resting on the succeeding white keys. Now press each key from Middle C down to the next C. What you just pressed are the keys of a scale, the C Major scale. Note that in this scale, white keys are the only keys used. As you discover other scales, you will learn that all other scales involve the use of black keys.
From this scale, you may start creating chords. Chords are any group of notes that are played as a group. With the use of the C Major scale, you can form several different chords. Now, look at your keyboard again and rest your finger on Middle C. Now press the Middle C, the key one white key away from it, and the key one white key after that – C-E-G. There you have it, a C Major Chord triad. A triad just like this chord is a chord that requires three different notes. Other chords use four to five notes.
Another chord that can be formed using this scale is the F Major chord. This chord is formed with 3 notes, F, A and C. Now go ahead and play this chord.
At this juncture, you should notice something? There is a pattern to these major chords. This pattern is called the chord formula.
The pattern for major chords goes like this – root key, four halftones and 3 halftones. Note that a halftone is the smallest interval between two different notes. on the piano, this is the distance between two neighboring keys.
As you progress through your lessons, you will notice that other chord patterns follow their own formulas as well. Now, using the above formula, find all the keys that make up the G major chord.
This easy piano lesson ends with the chord progression. Remember all the chords you have just been taught? Play these chords in succession and end with a final C major. There, you just played your first chord progression.
