Definition and role of….
The Music Producer
The producer is the person(s) responsible for bringing a music project together with the aim of completing a music project from the start to the end. It is the responsibility of the producer to ensure that a studio session is run as smoothly as possible and all musical decisions fall on the responsibility of this person. The components and structure of a studio session vary greatly depending on the genre of music and the type of music being produced for a given purpose.
In Jazz, it is common for the music producer to have to organise a series of instrumentalists that may or may not be part of a band. The producer may need to obtain session players for a specific purpose. In the creation of a hiphop track, the producer is often also the ‘Beatmaker’ and may be responsible for bringing in backing vocalists to add to the track. In this instance the producer would work with the studio engineer to get the best possible performance recording the vocalist.
Contrary to public belief, the music producer does not have to play or read sheet music. It is the organisation and ear for music which makes a good producer.
The Beatmaker
The Beatmaker is commonly a solo music maker that works with a variety of hardware and software tools used to produce music. On the MusicProducerTV.com website you will see a variety of Beatmakers in the studio environment working with their tools of the trade. The Beatmakers tools often consist of a studio sequence package such as Cubase, Logic, or Reason. The music sequence package is often run off a PC or Mac computer, and is interface by MIDI or USB connectivity with ‘outboard’ equipment, such as a MIDI controller. The music sequence is also capable of housing a complete studio sweet of sounds with no need for external sound sources such as synthesizers.
The Instrumentalist/Session player
The session music player is often trained on a music instrument to a high level and is often able to read sheet music and play by ear. This music instrument player often drifts from session to session and plays in many different variety of performance from live theatre public street performances.
The studio producer often finds the instrumentalist useful for interpolating popular music tracks. The producer Just Blaze has often called upon session players in instances where he hasn’t been able to gain sample clearance rights for a song.
The Studio Engineer
The studio engineer is responsible for the operation of all of the technology within the studio. The studio engineer will often work in specific studio location where he/she is familiar with all of the equipment. The studio engineer will setup the microphone, and ensure its positioned correctly within the correct environment relevant to the sound source that is being recorded. The influence of a studio engineer on a recording session will vary greatly depending on the situation. Studio engineers such as Jimmy Douglas are famous for getting the most out of a studio session and have experience of working with famous artists on multiple projects.
