Whether or not you have seen any of the Fanny Hill films, reading the book to get the true taste is a must. Written while author John Cleland was in debtor’s prison for owing the equivelent of over $100,000 in today’s money, Fanny Hill is considered the first ‘erotic’ novel in English.

The hilarious story of Fanny Hill and her erotic exploits in London shocked religious and literary hierarchy when it first appeared, who condemned the book, thus immediately increasing demand for it. Two small earthquakes were credited to the book by the Bishop of London and Cleland was arrested and briefly imprisoned, but Fanny Hill has near-constantly remained in print, even where declared criminal. Due to its scarcity for most of its more than 250-year life, Fanny Hill was shrouded in controversy, and banned from publication in the United States until 1966. Once considered pornographic and vile, Fanny Hill, or the Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure was censored in the US. However, the defence argued that Fanny Hill was a historical source book and that it was a joyful celebration of normal non-perverted sex. The great triumph of the novel is to portray its young heroine, Fanny, as resourceful, intelligent and jubilant while she progresses through her life of pleasure. Cleland’s writing is witty, learned, and full of classical allusion. The fact that the story is bookended with a romance makes it the predecessor of modern romantic novels.

Fanny Hill lacks dramatic tension and events, and Cleland seems to lack the ability to weave narration with digression. Does this hurt the book? John Cleland’s book Fanny Hill can be appreciated openly for the powerful novel it truly is. Fanny Hill remains a erotic book, encompassing the broad gamut of human sexuality in ways that both charm and arouse.
